For practical reasons, most portraits are done from photographs. If you are interested in having a portrait painted, please contact me at lornahanes@hotmail.com.

    Dear Lorna,
Wow! I am blown away by your talent! I had no idea. For someone who loves to paint but cannot do portraits at all, I am very, very impressed. Did you really only start painting 3-4 years ago? You must have sketched/drawn things long before that, right? Besides the quality of your work, I am also struck by the quantity of it. I wonder if you sometimes feel drawn to your studio space instead of to your classroom, although I know both give you enormous satisfaction.

If you ever have an exhibit, please let me know.

Hank and I continue to enjoy retirement. We both do a lot of volunteer work in the area. I am a library trustee, do volunteer math tutoring at our library, and give tours at the Smith Botanic gardens. I am in two book clubs–one of which has 5 males and 2 females and reads challenging things and has intense raucous discussions. Besides gardening and painting, I also enjoy my 5 wonderful grandchildren. I have them all doing watercolor painting and loving it.

I see that Malia has grown into a lovely young woman. Enjoy every moment. Our oldest, Lydia, is now 17 and applying early to Penn. Soon she will be out on her own. I remember sitting in my office at WNEC when I got a call from Julie from the labor room at Georgetown.

I wonder if Dick told you that he and I are part of a small group of people studying Italian together. Fran Funai is also in the group. We meet about once a month to share some translations we have done, do some translations on the spot, and then share some writing of our own. The writing part is the most difficult–all those verb tenses. Yikes! Anyway it’s a wonderful mental challenge.

    Be well and be happy.
